About

In this virtual shed, we gather old tales of life in coastal California, with a focus on people whose ancestors settled here to make their living from the land or sea. In each episode we hear the stories of one family, as a son talks about the ranch with his father or a wife reminisces with her husband. By taking the form of conversations more than interviews, the Story Shed project helps history come to life. Listeners are let in on the kitchen-table-style banter and recollection that is alive and well on modern family ranches today.

The Story Shed is recorded, edited and produced by Jacoba Charles, a fifth generation Californian who grew up on a sheep ranch in northern Sonoma County. She holds a masters degree from the Columbia School of Journalism, and her work has appeared in the New York Times and on Salon.com.

Support for The Story Shed is provided by the Marin Media Institute.
